emailWhat should you know about Email Marketing?  Essentially, Email Marketing, also called “keyword stuffing,” is when you artificially place keywords onto a site in order to tamper with the natural and accurate function of search engines.  The frequency and relevancy of keywords help distinguish allowed keyword use (What Hat SEO) from unethical and dishonest keyword use (Black Hat SEO).

Search engines like Google are one of the key elements of having a successful online business.  As you may know, Google has programs (generically called “spiders,” and specifically called googlebots) that scan websites.  Googlebots determine the relevance of websites based in part by keywords located on their site) to optimize the search results Google produces when people search for things.

The idea behind this is that when people search for things, their results will be somewhat “natural.”  By natural, it basically means that, in addition to carefully placed ads, Google wants the results to searches done on their page to be helpful in assisting the person who is searching to find the info they need quickly.

Being aware of this, web masters have turned to website creation and tweaking strategies called SEO, or Search Engine Optimization.  Search engine optimization is generally the process of creating or editing web content so that it is more likely to be noticed by search engines.  Ultimately, from an e-commerce standpoint, having a high ranking (closer to the top) on Google’s search results for a given keyword, is a major advantage. SEOThere are two types of SEO keyword strategies:  one is called White Hat SEO and the other Black Hat SEO.  White Hat SEO is when you comply with search engine guidelines and do not try to artificially tamper the system the search engine has in place designed to produce natural results.  If you fail to follow the search engine company’s guidelines, your site could be removed temporarily (or permanently) from their search results altogether.

This sounds scary!  It shouldn’t, though.  If you are honest and are creating useful and informational content, using basic White Hat SEO strategies is ethical and allowed.  However, if you choose to engage in Black Hat SEO, you could be in for trouble.

Black Hat SEO is basically when you do artificial things to your site in an effort to tamper with natural search results, only for the purpose of having a higher ranking on a search engine. One example of Black Hat SEO is called keyword stuffing.  Keyword stuffing can occur in two ways.  One way is when you try to hide key words from visibility by making them invisible (using the same font and background color).  The other is when you place keywords in such as small font (especially hiding or “stuffing” them at the bottom of a page) in order to attempt to elude visibility on your site.

Why is keyword stuffing wrong?  The reason is because, until you are caught, people will land on your site due to unrelated searches.  This is frustrating to the searcher.  While this may be great for you in the short term in terms of traffic, it may not be very helpful in terms of actual sales.  Also, search engine companies like Google are fully aware of this and when they catch you, the penalties can be severe (such as removal from Google search results).
